2020 summary

NEW personal

2020 was a special year for everyone and I am no exception, check out what do I mean by that.

Summary of 2020

Pandemic

Everybody knows that the pandemic created strange situations, or at least new ones which we had to adapt to. At the university we immediately – as the pandemic started in Hungary – switched to online education, which has brought some interesting challanges. Alonside new opportunites came to my life.

University education

We had to decide how we would like to continue teaching. I personally believe in video based courses, instead of streaming. Both has advantages and disadvantages, but if I had to choose I would go for videos. Creating videos was in my mind since years, but now I had a good reason to try myself in this “YouTube stuff”.

At the semester when the pandemic started I was teaching WPF programming with all the relevant stuff like design patterns, API and Git usage etc., but due to the online education we had to reorganize the subjects and because of this I was asked to make videos and materials for the english students on Software Design and Development II. subject.

All together I made ~ 5 hours of content in this, which does not seem to be much, but all the videos are tight in terms of content.

Next semester – after the summer – was full online from the beginning, so I was intentionally about making videos for YouTube. The subject was Advanced Development Techniques (C#). For this I made ~ 12 hours of content, which I a whole new level I would say.

There were a few additional subjects which needed to have some materials, but nothing serious amount, roughly 5 hours of content.

Personal website

I launched my personal website, which was my long-time desire, but I always postponed it. Now I had enought free time to do it. It is available at https://siposm.hu.

At the same time I launched my blog, which I also wanted for a while now. It is available at https://siposm.hu/blog. Here I can write about my thoughts, experiments with different languages or techniques, and it is good to leave some footprints.

I created two versions from the main site, and 4-6 versions of the blog site, I’m planning to write in depth about them in a separate post later.

New job opportunity

Apart from the essential changes at University, a new job opportunity came to me, so I started working as a Senior full stack developer at a new startup, more on that later.

This year was not lacking coding, so far I made 2235 commits (but realistically it is higher, since GitLab counts “contributions”, not only commits. So it is more accurate if I write 2235 pushes, instead of commits).

Researchers Night 2020

I was asked to present my research work in neural networks at Researchers Night 2020. I recently wrote about that here.

Guiding thesis works

This year 10 students were about the graduate, from them 8 managed to do so. All of them had great topics so it was a good experience to guide so different areas of IT.

Thesis titles:

  • Online multiplayer game development and examination by information security standards
  • C++ based game development with anti-cheat system
  • Development of a language independent, graph based, DSL defined code generating and modelling tool
  • Cornering predictor with neural network using map and previous patterns
  • Route planning based on traffic signs image processing
  • Development of a language independent, graph based, DSL defined code generating and modelling GUI
  • Healthcare application based on javascript
  • Creating neural network based artificial intelligence for board game

Sum up in numbers

  • I made ~ 2235 commits
  • I made ~ 22 hours of video content for YouTube
  • I guided 8 graduate students throught their thesis work

Thanks for reading, cheers to everybody – see you in 2021. 🥳 👋🏻
